Services I Offer

Romanian Conference Interpreter

I have carried out simultaneous interpreting at international conferences (Trade Unions meetings, European Works Councils), formal meetings (General Dental Council, Bristol Summit) using a tour guide system (for the interactive workshops) or working in a booth with a colleague. During my latest assignment as a Romanian Conference Interpreter I did live remote interpretation from English to Romanian for a webcast on “Antibiotics and risk Factors” for GlaxoSmithKline.

Business Interpreting

I have carried out business interpreting for less formal company meetings, factory visits, exhibitions, product launches (New Opel Astra), multi national ciyber security meetings and accompanying delegations. It mainly involves consecutive or whispered interpreting. Whispered interpreting is recommended when a small number of foreign language speakers need interpretation – not more than two or three.

Police & Court Interpreting

I am qualified and security vetted Romanian Police and Court Interpreter with 7 years of experience in the field. Thus, you can be confident in the service I provide with confidentiality and integrity. I have interpreted from Romanian into English and from English into Romanian for police and courts, CPS, witness care unit, the probation service, solicitors, at arbitrations procedures and tribunals.

Telephone Interpreting

It is considered an efficient and affordable method of especially when the meeting is short. Using a Cordless Headset Phone which enable me to take notes I can provide an accurate and secure interpretation service. The three-way connection can be provided by the customer or arranged at my end.

DIPLOMA IN PUBLIC SERVICES INTERPRETER Course (DPSI)

The DPSI is a first-degree level qualification (QCF Level 6) in terms of language skills required for those interpreting in the UK in a Public Service context. A candidate must pass all the components (written translation, sight translation, consecutive interpreting, and simultaneous interpreting) of the DPSI exam organized by IOL every year in June. To find out more about the exam please click on http://www.iol.org.uk/qualifications/DPSI/Handbook/DPSIHB11.pdf.

In the UK this qualification represents a standard of quality for Public Service Interpreters and it is a must in order for an interpreter to be on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters. I have personally passed this exam in 2010 with Distinction. I also had the opportunity of teaching DPSI as a language tutor as part of the DPSI Online course run by Helena el Masri and I trained candidates to pass the exam since 2010 until 2014.

Given my background in teaching I am now able to mentor Romanian candidates sitting their DPSI exams. The sessions will be held online and I will guide you through the terminology and you will have plenty of practice using past papers. With my help, you will learn 2 interpreting techniques (consecutive and simultaneous), sight translations strategies and translation skills as well as the legal jargon. The nature of the training is to help you enhance your interpreting skills which presuppose that your English is already to a good standard as this is not the main focus of this course.

TYPES OF ROMANIAN CONFERENCE INTERPRETING

SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING

Chuchotage (whispering technique)

This technique is used when there are only a few delegates requiring interpretation as by definition the Romanian Conference Interpreter is whispering directly into the ear of the delegates and they would need to sit or stand close together to hear the interpretation.I have predominately provided whispering interpreting into Romanian in various Courts of Law in England and Wales for defendants who do not speak English in order to assist them in following the legal proceedings against them. As a rule, the Romanian Conference Interpreter is seated or standing among the delegates and interprets simultaneously directly into the ear of the delegates/ end users. It is used instead of consecutive (sometimes alternatively) in order to save time and ideally the whispering Romanian interpreter will use a headphone to get a good quality sound from the speaker. It does have its limitations and it recommended only for a small number of delegates. Because the interpretation is carried out simultaneously it is advisable for the Romanian Conference Interpreter to have a colleague to take over every 30 minutes or so unless this technique is used alternatively with consecutive interpreting. Also, the Romanian Conference Interpreter must have regular breaks, at least every 1.5 hours, especially if there is only one Romanian Interpreter working on his / her own.

In a booth

Simultaneous interpreting is a highly specialized area of interpreting (oral translation) carried out at the same rate of speech as the speaker perhaps with only a few seconds of lag time. The Romanian Conference Interpreter will normally be working in a booth with one other colleague which would take over after a certain period of time (usually 30 minutes) because it is a particularly strenuous effort requiring maximum concentration along with the necessary linguist skills and the subject-specific knowledge. Thus, the delegate speaks into a microphone and the Romanian Conference Interpreter can hear him / her through the headsets and starts translating almost simultaneously his speech. The delegates will listen to the interpretation using headsets and selecting the correct language channel. It is perhaps the most efficient way of interpreting under time constraints but it is important to bear in mind that in this particular case, the interpreters and the equipment (soundproof booths) represent a coherent whole. When assessing your needs and resources please take into account the number of delegates requiring interpretation, if there are more languages required and more importantly the length of time (number of days, half a day) and the type of event. For example, a live and interactive webcast on a medical topic, broadcasted in 6 different countries with a number of 30 participants can be efficiently translated into 6 languages with simultaneous interpreting from an interpreting suite with soundproof booths based in London. This is called video remote interpreting and although there are pros and cons, it appears to have recently gained in popularity due to its practicality.

Tour-guide system

Another way of providing simultaneous interpreting would be via Tour-guide system which is perfect for tourists but also for factory visits, presentations ‘on the move’. A tour guide system would contain: 20 headsets for the delegates/ tourists, 1 handheld microphone used by the original speaker to speak into, 1 headset with microphone and its pocket-transmitter for the Romanian Conference Interpreter to listen and interpret. I found that it is particularly useful when there is a large coverage area, background noise and less distraction for the others persons who do not require interpretation. Such a system allow me, the Romanian interpreter, to speak at a normal volume without putting a strain on my voice by whispering to the audience.

CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING

As the name suggest, the Romanian Conference Interpreter will render the message after the speaker stops and this could be after one or two sentences – short consecutive – or after 10 / 15 minutes in which case it is referred to as long consecutive. The former is predominantly used for police interviews, cross examinations in court, doctor – patient consultations. The latter is used for presentations and short speeches so that it doesn’t interrupt the flow of the speaker. The Romanian Conference Interpreter sitting or standing behind the speaker will take notes to be able to render the message accurately which is why it is often referred to as long consecutive with notes. Please note that long consecutive with notes requires a lot of training and practice and as a rule a professional Romanian Conference Interpreter would be able to provide this service as well. I have personally studied and learnt this type of interpreting during my Masters in Conference Interpreting and I was formally assessed for both Romanian into English and English into Romanian. I have developed my own notation system and I use certain memory techniques to be able to render a 10 minutes’ speech accurately.

LIAISON INTERPRETING

Liaison interpretation is often referred to as consecutive interpreting but the distinctive aspect is that is use bilaterally between two parties that speak English and Romanian for example, which could be two people or two small groups. Therefore, it is imperative for the Romanian Interpreter to possess a sound command of both languages (language A and B, in my case I can translate between English and Romanian. This type of interpreting does not require any equipment or extensive note taking, usually the Romanian interpreter will make short notes of proper names, numbers, etc. It is important for the Romanian interpreter to know exactly the relationships between the speaker, what their role is and a professional Romanian interpreter would always ask questions to establish these details and the subject matter of the meeting. Also, a liaison Romanian interpreter will always be aware of the implications of her performance which must be in line with the code of conduct and professional code of ethics.

Testimonials

I have known Diana Singureanu, professionally, for the last 6 years and admire her work commitment and ethics. Diana has been teaching the DPSI Law preparatory course since September 2010 and I have received great feedback on her skills and teaching methods. Her work with the students included practising consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, sight translation and feedback on written work. She has been an excellent role model to her students, always working to high standards and that is why I am delighted to have her on my team of DPSI Tutors. I have no hesitation in recommending her as an interpreter and tutor/trainer as I trust she will be fully committed to any course/project she embarks on.

Helena El Masri – DPSI Online

Excellent job, very professional and well-mannered. Very easy to work with.

Estefania Solar, Event Manager, Bristol Summit

Every Romanian Interpreting course needs Diana – her teaching is compelling, rigorous and imbued with an uncanny knack to hit the precise ‘mot juste’ in both Romanian and English. Her Public Service Interpreting knowledge is current, topical and fresh from the reality of Romanian individuals faced with the British Legal system. It is a privilege to be her interlocutor.

FAQs

Why are interpreters so expensive?

First of all, it is important to understand that someone who is able to speak to languages is not an interpreter. Not any more than I am a pianist because I’ve got 10 fingers. For someone who speaks (at least) two languages to become an interpreter it takes year of training and practice, intense concentration, a professional sense of ethics combined with specialist knowledge and vocabulary. It is essential to hire a professional interpreter who is able understand what speakers / delegates are saying with all the shades of meaning and cultural nuances and then render that in the other language accurately facilitating communication between the parties.

What information will I need to provide when I request a quote for an interpreting assignment?

To be able to provide you with an accurate quote I will need the following information: date, time, location, address, contact details, type of event and any other details pertaining to your assignment. Prior to the assignment I will need to have a good overview of the subject matter and usually I will ask for preparation materials (especially for business meetings, arbitration procedures, conference interpreting). Preparation is essential to the success of your meeting and please bear in mind that it is in fact part of my job description. In fact, you should be weary of interpreters who do not ask for any materials to prepare, they are not more experienced or confident. Perhaps they are simply not willing to put in the effort to do the invisible work. All professional interpreters know that both general background and specific subject knowledge play a fundamental role in their job.

How do you guarantee confidentiality?

As a professional Romanian Conference Interpreter, registered with Official Bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists, IAPTI (The International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters) I abide by their Code of Ethics which includes strict compliance with the confidentiality of client information. Also, I am happy to sign any specific confidentiality agreements with the client upon request.

Why do I need to book two Romanian Conference Interpreters for conference interpreting projects?

Simultaneous interpreting requires intense concentration and each Romanian Conference Interpreter can efficiently translate for no more than 35-40 minutes at a stretch and then the colleagues takes over. If an Romanian interpreter has to carry on for longer than that the quality of the interpretation will be affected. Sometimes clients ask for only one interpreter because obviously two interpreters cost more than one but I would not want to compromise the quality of my interpreting service or the credibility of your presentation.

How do you price?

The pricing structure is very transparent and it takes into account the length of your meeting and the language interpreting technique you need. Please contact me to discuss your specific requirements and you will receive a free quote based on your requirements. I can also organize the equipment for you.
